The Hateful Eight:
In ‘The Hateful Eight’, set six, eight or 12 years after the Civil War, a stagecoach struggles to make it through the harsh winter landscape of Wyoming. Bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his prisoner Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) rush to the town of Red Rock, where Ruth, known locally as ‘The Hangman’, will ensure that Domergue gets his deserved punishment. Along the way, they encounter two strangers - Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), a former soldier and now infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a renegade Southerner who claims to be the town's new sheriff.
Disoriented in the blizzard, they seek shelter at 'Minnies', a well-known stagecoach stopover in a mountain pass. Upon arrival, they are not greeted by the owner but are greeted by four unfamiliar faces - Bob (Demian Bichir), who is tending Minnie's business while she visits her mother, Red Rock's executioner, Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), cowboy Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm intensifies and closes the mountain pass, our eight travelers realize that they may not all make it to Red Rock after all…
‘The Hateful Eight’ is nominated for three Oscars: Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Jason Leigh), Best Original Score (Ennio Morricone) and Best Cinematography (Robert Richardson).
Barely Lethal:
16-year-old Megan Walsh (Hailee Steinfeld) is in training to become an ice-cold international assassin, but secretly she longs to be a completely normal teenager. So she fakes her own death, enrolls in a high school as an exchange student, and is placed with a foster family.
But high school life is not what Megan thought it would be, and she quickly finds out that being normal is much harder than it seems, and that it takes some very special skills to survive the special rules and intrigues of high school.
Cool Men:
Jackson and Mac play the two disenfranchised musicians Louis and Floyd, who have a past in the soul trio The Deal. The Deal was a hit in the 60s and 70s, but went their separate ways when Louis and Floyd fell out with each other. Louis is living a miserable life after a stint in jail, and Floyd has more or less retired after years of success as a car wash owner. When the third member of the trio, Marcus, dies, Floyd sees the chance to return to the spotlight, and soon the middle-aged guys are on the road again.
Soul Men rock out to a soulful and swinging soundtrack, while Jackson and Mac do what they do best: deliver funny and charming performances.
Soul Men was the last film Bernie Mac made before he died. The film's composer, soul legend Isaac Hayes, also died shortly after the film was finished.
