Siblings Samuel and Magdalena, who were raised in a religious congregation in Denmark, suddenly disappear. And at Copenhagen Police Station, an 8-year-old message in a bottle appears with a cry for help from a boy in captivity.
Carl Mørck and his assistant Assad from the police Department Q quickly find out that there is a connection between the two cases, and they manage to dig into the religious community and track down a man who leaves behind a years-long trail of kidnappings and murders. Murders that have never been reported, as he allegedly abducts two children from very religious families each time, kills one child and demands silence and a large ransom for the other. Time is running out and in the quest to find the children before it is too late, Carl Mørck must realize that believing in something is closely linked to life and death.
